How to clean your Veldskoen

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR VELLIES

So, your fantastic vellies have just arrived from VELDSKOEN, and they look amazing! But now, you’re a bit worried about taking those beauties for a walk. They’re suede after all, what if they get dirty?

Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Veldskoen have been worn by Southern African farmers for centuries. Farmers are always on their feet and always outside. Their shoes interact with dust and mud and all kinds of interesting things that office shoes and town shoes never see.  Your vellies were built to last, you just need to know how to care for them. So, before we give you the 1,2,3 instructions, let’s talk about the leather quickly.

THE THING ABOUT SUEDE…

Mossop leather. Mossop skins. Leather tannery.

All leather improves with age, if it is well preserved.  Suede leather doesn’t traditionally like water. Getting any suede product sopping wet, will change the way the leather feels and looks. So, the washing machine is never an option, okay? And when you do use water to clean your suede shoes (which we’ll get to in a minute), you need to use it sparingly.

HYDROPHOBIC VELLIES

vellies in water. Veldskoen in water Hypdrophobic vellies. hydrophobic veldskoen.

Luckily all our VELDSKOEN leather shoes, including the suede ones, have been given a hydrophobic leather treatment. This treatment makes water droplets roll off the leather, instead of being immediately absorbed into it. So, while we still don’t recommend taking your suede vellies for a swim, the layer of hydrophobic protection on VELDSKOEN leathers gives you time to wipe off any spills before they permanently become part of your shoes.

KEEPING VELLIES SPOTLESS

To clean VELDSKOEN vellies, we’ve developed an amazing shoe cleaner called SPOTLESS.

Spotless shoe cleaner. Spotless shoe cleaning kit.

Veldskoen Spotless Shoe Cleaner allows your shoes to start each new adventure looking like new. Fit a muddy music festival, a hike in the mountains, and your cousins fancy-shmancy winelands wedding into the same weekend, and into the same pair of shoes. Spotless cleans mainly washable and porous shoe surfaces, including canvas, and some leathers, specifically suede.

It’s the best way to revitalise the appearance of your shoes.  Learn about how to clean your entire shoe with Spotless, here.

If you don’t have a Spotless kit around, we suggest you keep your suede VELDSKOEN vellies looking sharp, by doing the following:

 1. Remove the laces from your Veldskoen.

Those can be washed separately by hand or in the machine.

2. Get those Vellies nice and dry before you do anything to them.

If you got mud on them, leave those babies in the sun until it is completely dried up.  Do not try to speed up the drying process by throwing your shoes in the dryer and attacking them with your hair dryer.

3. Brush off any dirt with a wire brush.

4. Dampen a microfibre cloth with warm water, and wipe over the affected area in circular motions.

Don’t use and soaps or products that aren’t recommended for suede. Do not pour water on the shoe, the water from the cloth will be enough. You can also use a damp cloth to wipe the soles of your vellies.

5. Let your Vellies dry in the sun.

Once again, never put them in a dryer or try to speed up the drying process with a hair dryer. All suede hates that. Even ours.
