Veldskoen Honoured at Long March to Freedom
A South African Icon Takes Its Place in History: Veldskoen Honoured at Long March to Freedom
A story that began over 400 years ago has found a permanent place in South Africa’s heritage.
On 7 July 2026, Veldskoen reached a historic milestone with the unveiling of the Veldskoen Plaque at the Long March to Freedom exhibition in Cape Town - a moment that celebrates far more than a shoe.
It celebrates a story of craftsmanship, resilience, innovation and South African identity.
For generations, the veldskoen has been part of the fabric of South African life. Born from practicality and shaped by the hands of skilled makers, this iconic shoe has travelled across landscapes, cultures and communities, becoming a symbol of adaptability, endurance and connection.
Today, that story has been recognised as part of our nation’s shared heritage.

More Than a Shoe. A Story of South Africa.
When Veldskoen was founded in 2016, the brand set out to reimagine one of South Africa’s most recognisable shoes for a modern generation and a global audience.
While preserving the distinctive silhouette and heritage of the traditional veldskoen, Veldskoen introduced bold colours, contemporary styling and a fresh perspective - transforming a historic design into a globally recognised expression of South African creativity.
From local communities to global cities, every pair carries a story of where it comes from: a story of craftsmanship, entrepreneurship and the people who continue to shape South Africa’s future.
The unveiling of the Veldskoen Plaque at Long March to Freedom recognises this remarkable journey and ensures that future generations can connect with a story that stretches from indigenous craftsmanship to modern South African innovation.
As Dali Tambo, CEO of the National Heritage Project Company, owners and operators of Long March to Freedom, explains:
“This recognition is not simply about a shoe. Veldskoen represents a remarkable South African story that spans cultures, generations and communities. By recognising its place in our shared heritage, we are acknowledging the ingenuity, resilience and craftsmanship that have shaped South Africa’s identity and continue to inspire people today.”

Preserving Heritage. Inspiring the Future.
The partnership between Veldskoen and Long March to Freedom arrives at a meaningful moment as the brand reflects on its first decade.
Veldskoen’s journey has always been about more than creating footwear. It is about championing local craftsmanship, supporting South African industry and sharing the stories that define who we are.
As Adrian Moors, Director of Veldskoen, says:
“The Veldskoen story is South Africa’s story, and Veldskoen® proudly embraces the stewardship of one of the country’s most iconic products and enduring cultural stories.”
Adrian Moors, Director, Veldskoen
This commitment to heritage has become central to the Veldskoen® identity - moving beyond product-focused storytelling and embracing the responsibility of preserving and celebrating a piece of South African culture.
